Rodent (Rat & Mice) Control

Often considered winter pests, rodents (rats & mice) can pose a threat to stored products and damage to property through to causing fire by gnawing on electrical wiring. Whether it's for meeting compliance standards or safeguarding homes, we can ensure your health and safety.

Common rodents found in South East Queensland include mice, Roof Rats and Norway Rats.

The most common sign of a rodent infestation is actually seeing a mouse or rat, alive or dead. Other than actually seeing a rodent on the premises, the next most common sign that rodents have invaded the worksite is seeing their droppings. These will be found near food sources in cupboards, drawers or bins where food is stored, overhead in attics or drop ceilings, or on pathways such as wall studs or beams. A good place to look in the desk drawers of employees who bring in and keep food in their desks. Mice and rats love to find these often-overlooked areas!

Gnawed or nibbled food and/or its packaging is another sign of rodents, as is gnawing around holes or gaps in the wood of the building, indicating that some rodent has made its way into the workplace.

Prevention and Control

Once you have confirmed that rodents are in your home or workplace, you can take the following steps to make the uninvited guests leave.

Rodent Proofing

Identify areas in need of rodent proofing, but don't proceed until you've eliminated the rodents. Build Rodents Out

  • Close all holes in exterior and interior walls.

  • Permit no openings over 1/4 of an inch, particularly around doors and windows Install self-closing devices on frequently used doors.

  • Install vinyl or runner sweep seals under garage doors to eliminate any gaps.

  • Tighten seals around pipes, drains and vents.

  • Cap chimneys and make sure they're in good condition.

Recommended Rodent-Proofing Materials

  • Steel Wool Hardware Cloth (19-gauge or better)

  • Perforated Metal (24-gauge thickness)

  • Sheet Metal (26-gauge thickness or heavier)

  • Cement Mortar (1:3 mixture or richer)

Eliminate Pest-Friendly Conditions

It's important to identify conditions that enable the rodent problem to exist, and then implement corrective measures.

Habitat Reduction

  • Eliminate the rodent’s food and water source.

  • Identify habitat areas and eliminate them indoors and outdoors.

  • Keep grass and vegetation cut short. Tall grass protects rodents from predators.

  • Cut back overhanging trees. Overhanging trees provide dark, shadowy areas where rodents feel safe and protected.

  • Remove piles of debris from the exterior of the structure. Garbage and clutter around the perimeter are habitat areas for rodents.

  • Establish a 2-foot-wide barrier of cement or crushed rock around the structure.

  • Improve sanitation practices in and around the house.

Do-it-yourself household maintenance is all the rage these days, and that extends to rodent control methods. In fact, an online search for “how to get rid of mice” or “rodent traps” will give you pages of results. But does that mean it’s OK to try to get rid of rodents on your own?

Amateur DIY products can be a cost effective way to control rat problems in low risk areas. However, professional pest control is required for high risk areas, more established rat colonies or where there is a repeated problem with rats.

Terminett has a team of experts ready to get rid of your rat problems quickly and efficiently & offer you advice on how to keep rats away from your home.

Dangers Associated With DIY Rodent Control Methods

To start, rodents can carry pathogens that may cause disease. Therefore, you don’t want to put yourself into a position in which you’re coming into contact with these rodents or their droppings, urine or anything that could potentially cause you or your family to become ill.

Also, some types of rodents, like roof rats, typically infest attics. Properly placing trapping devices in your attic can potentially put you in danger, especially if your attic is unfinished and if the rodents are active.

Because of these dangers, it’s best to rely on an experienced rodent control professional when it comes to rodent control methods.
